The Land Rover Defender is one of the most iconic cars out there. Since its introduction in 1983, it has remained true to its core values as an off-road vehicle. With the latest version, the British brand wants to prove that the Defender is equally at home on tarmac and dirt roads. So, what's our take on the Land Rover Defender 90?

Smooth on the Road

When driving the new Land Rover Defender 90one notices an undeniable road presence. At almost 2 meters in height and width, we overlook most other vehicles on the road, while sitting in the driver seat. Surprisingly, the car remains maneuverable and doesn't feel as bulky as one might expect. With its 400hp, it also delights with great power in situations requiring acceleration and speed.

A huge step was taken in terms of driver assistance. The Land Rover Defender 90 now comes with state-of-the-art cruise control, speed limiter, land keep assist and 3D surround camera. A digital instrument panel and a large 11-inch entertainment screen offer easy accessibility to all these features.

Overall, the interior of the Land Rover Defender 90 is a clever mix of utility and discreet luxury. A combination the British brand is well known for. True to its DNA, there's a tastefully integrated rustic feel to the interior. Exposed bolts are on the doors and metal is visible on both the steering wheel and dashboards. Still, we don't have to miss modern day luxuries like heated seats, 3D panoramic cameras and a Meridian sound system. All we can ask for as businessmen when driving on the highway or in the city. But what about the explorer inside of us, would he buy it too?

Serious Off-Road Capabilities

While most consumers don't drive their SUVs off-road, someone in Switzerland or the Scottish Highlands might! And this is where the Land Rover Defender 90 differs from its competition. It can conquer a wide range of terrains, from snowy mountains to deserts and rivers.

The engineers equipped it with all necessary tools to prevail when facing rough terrain. The most important is its electronically controlled suspension. At the push of a button, the ground clearance can be lowered by 40mm, or raised by 75mm to 145mm. This radically transforms the height of the car and allows it to overcome any obstacle. Aided by its 4-wheel drive, it has a variety of driving modes that will support the pilot in challenging situations. One example is the elevated air intake. With it we don't have to worry about crossing rivers or cruising through deserts.

Our Take on the new Land Rover Defender 90

For us, the new Land Rover Defender 90 strikes the perfect balance between the iconic Defender look and feel and modern day comfort and safety. The updated infotainment and driver assistance make it comfortable to drive on the road while the off-road capabilities have also been enhanced further. In our opinion, this is the perfect vehicle for someone looking to drive an iconic SUV that comes with modern technology.

On a crisp winter day, the silent countryside is pierced by the deep growl of a compressed v8, occasionally interrupted by its own gun-like exhaust. This unmistakable sound belongs to the Jaguar F-Pace SVRthe British brand's supercharged SUV. First released in 2018, it received a slight facelift in 2021 to keep up with the times. And it is now equipped with a state-of-the-art infotainment system and has received upgrades to its interior finishes. Let's have a look together!

The Jaguar F-Pace SVR's Engine and Handling

Powered by a 550bhp compressed v8, the Jaguar F-Pace SVR offers 516nm of torque to all four wheels. No need to say that you feel sheer power when putting your right foot down. The 8-speed automatic transmission is almost instantaneous, although it is not the smoothest. This results in a responsive car that reacts quickly when the driver presses the accelerator. For more sensitive driving, we recommend you stay in comfort or economy mode.

One thing to keep in mind when purchasing a new Jaguar F-Pace SVRare the costs associated with its ownership. This vehicle consumes a minimum of 9l/100km when driving at its best. But with the slightest acceleration you can see it climb to 30l/100km. A quick trip can therefore get expensive quite quickly. That being said, nothing else is expected from an engine of this size.

High-end finishing

Walking around the Jaguar F-Pace SVR for the first time, we immediately notice the well finished exterior with aerodynamic lines. Without having a too aggressive appearance, its SUV spirit remains intact. On the other hand, some crucial parts like the side skirts, air vents and front air intakes are made from plastic instead of carbon fiber for example. Considering the overall quality of the car, this is a bit disappointing.

Still, the car is very well finished overall, with the interior feeling particularly nice. The cockpit offers the perfect mix of sport and luxury. The leather sport seats keep the driver strapped in, even at high speeds. A crucial feature!

When it comes to the infotainment system, Jaguar has made big improvements with its latest update. The new Jaguar F-Pace SVR now comes equipped with an 11-speaker Meridian audio system. Plus, it now has a large 11.4-inch touchscreen on the center column. Both Apple Carplay and Android Auto are now seamlessly integrated with wireless connectivity.

What's our Take?

With the 2022 facelift of the Jaguar F-Pace SVRJaguar has delivered a much needed update on connectivity and infotainment. While retaining the car's DNA as a highly dynamic SUV, it is capable of both comfort and performance. The compressed v8 lives up to its promise, delivering torque and sound when needed.

If you are looking to spend north of CHF 120'000 on a sports SUV, then the Jaguar F-Pace SVR is a serious contender to other vehicles in this category. So make sure to schedule a test drive soon! If you are more interested on an electric vehicle, then check out this article about the Jaguar I-Pace.

In the last few years, the pace toward total electrification has taken over the automotive industry. More traditional car brands have understood that electrified mobility seems to be the future. Now it is Jaguar’s turn to start their transition. Their flagship? The Jaguar I-Pace, a 400 horsepower, silent SUV.

The Jaguar I-Pace is capable of performance…

Their latest iteration of the well known SUV is looking to fend for itself in the SUV- and in the EV market. Its modern design and luxurious interior, featuring two large digital screens, are paired with great performances: 0 to 100km/h in 4.8s, all that in total silence. But passengers should brace themselves because the 696 Nm of torque will be felt in the acceleration. Traction-wise, the all-wheel drive allows the Jaguar to perform well on both a highway and on a mountain pass.

...but in English luxury

Seeing the performance numbers above, one may think that the Jaguar I-Pace is a performance SUV and thus may not be comfortable for long road trips. But here at Artworth, we like to combine performance with comfort, and in that regard, the car has impressed us.

Indeed, Jaguar has stayed true to its reputation, and sitting in the driver’s seat, one can only appreciate the generous leather dashboard, the various screens displaying relevant information and infotainment, and the quality, which can be felt when pushing the START button.

We love how the British quality can be felt in the cabin when driving and handling the interior controls. The driver’s screen can be personalized through buttons on the steering wheel, while the central console may be used by the passenger, through the used of the touch screen.

A promising first step for Jaguar

So, is this high-performance SUV the future of the famous brand? We believe that indeed this car represent the first step toward an electrified future at Jaguar. The innovative team behind the British brand will certainly work hard to make electric cars even lighter to further improve its range and overall performance. For now, we are already more than happy with the current Jaguar I-Pace and love to take it on long trips and exciting drives through in the Swiss mountains.

How would you imagine an F1 car in evening attire? Refined proportions, timeless design and unparalleled performance might come to mind. Well, meet the new Ferrari Roma!

Understated Luxury

Based on the Ferrari Portofino, the new Ferrari Roma is an ultra high performance turbocharged V8 model placed between the Portofino and the F8 Tributo in Ferrari's range of sports cars. It represents a renaissance for a Ferrari that embodies understated luxury. With its distinctive flair and style, the car is a contemporary representation of the care-free, pleasurable way of life that characterized Rome in the 1950s and '60s. An era that we are particularly fond of here at Artworth.

Elegant, pure design

Ferrari is known for their recognisable designs. For the Roma's exterior, the Ferrari Styling Centre went for an approach which gravitates around clean design and absolute symbiosis between its various elements. Harmonious proportions are complimented with pure, elegant volumes. To underline this thoughtful minimalism, all superfluous detailing has been removed.

Sport & Performance

The Ferrari Roma represents the pinnacle of performance in its category. This is thanks to its turbo-charged V8 from the family of engines that has won the overall International Engine of the Year Award four years running. In this version, the engine reaches 620 cv at 7500 rpm and is coupled with the new 8-speed DCT gearbox that was introduced on the SF90 Stradale. It is no surprise that this V8 engine impresses with an acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.

The Ferrari Roma's chassis benefits from the technology developed by Ferrari for its new generation models. Both body-shell and chassis have been redesigned to incorporate the latest weight reduction and advanced production technologies. An impressive 70% of its components are entirely new, resulting in the best weight/power ratio in its segment (2.37 kg/cv). This enhances overall handling dynamics and responsiveness.

Ferrari Roma in Gstaad

We had the opportunity to test drive the Ferrari Roma in the beautiful area of Gstaad in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. Here, winding roads on scenic routes offer amazing conditions. As we take the sports car for a spin, we immediately fall in love with it. Unparalleled performance meets driving pleasure and distinctive Ferrari charms. What a combination!

Far too soon we have to return to our home base, the Gstaad Palacewhere the test drive comes to an end. Now the question remains: Is the Ferrari Roma an F1 car in evening attire? Well, you would need to judge for yourself. Hence, we recommend you to book a test drive with your local dealer!

Perfection is the expression of each element in its purest form. And perfection is what one experiences when driving the new Rolls-Royce Ghost. Let us introduce you to the vehicle with a design built upon the architecture of luxury.

New Rolls-Royce Ghost

The new Rolls-Royce Ghost looks like one would imagine an R-R to look. Still, the only carry-over components from the first Ghost are apparently the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy and the umbrella that nestles within the B-pillars. The rest of the vehicle has been designed and engineered from scratch.

The Ghost comes with all-wheel drive which establishes newfound versatility and on-road dynamism without compromising the Magic Carpet Ride. Powered by the next generation 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12, the Ghost delivers impressive torque at low RPM. Another surprising feature is the illuminated Grille, which emits a divine glow, bestowing the car with a distinctive, 24-hour identity.

Inside the Luxury Vehicle

A convenient innovation in the new Rolls-Royce are the Effortless Doors. The iconic coach doors open and close with accommodating ease. It is much like a built-in chauffeur feature.

Artworth Roll-Royce Ghost Effortless Door

Interior details mirror the pared-back sentiment of the Ghost's exterior aesthetic. The modern finishes feel simultaneously timeless and visionary. A particular highlight is the Starlight Headliner. Emphasized with an ephemeral show of shooting stars, the celestial scene is a rarefied vision of pure beauty.

Another captivating feature is the high-gloss, illuminated Fascia. It is a masterful display of the mesmerizing craftsmanship at Rolls-Royce. When the vehicle is in motion, the wordmark is enlivened by the brilliance of 850 three-dimensional stars. In repose, the star field dims and the Fascia seemingly disappears into the abyss of the night.

In the back of the car, responsive touchscreens on the front-central control display offer intuitive, expedient, and refined control. Another unique feature is the champagne cooler which is accompanied by the world's finest crystal glasses preserves the integrity of any celebratory sip.

Overall, the new Rolls-Royce Ghost can only be described as one of a kind. Its refined design, inside and outside, combined with unique features, incomparable comfort, and power is simply unique.

The Swiss Canton of Grisons is known for its many beautiful valleys. One of them is called Schanfigg and is a true jewel of the Swiss Alps. This wild mountain valley has kept its original character and cultural features to this day. Here, imposing white mountains and romantic snow covered forests invite guests to experience unforgettable holidays - especially if they stay in the Arosa Kulm Hotel!

Alpine Test Drives

There is a particular reason for our visit at the Arosa Kulm Hotel. Guests who stay at the hotel are in for a treat this year, because the hotel has entered a collaboration with Land Rover. It is now possible to do test drives of the new Land Rover Defender and the Range Rover SVAutobiography. Something we definitely have to do!

Driving the new Defender in this mountainous terrain is a dream come true. We can feel how this vehicle was designed to be driven in this kind of environment. It is exhilarating to feel this car's power and versatility in the challenging terrain of the Swiss Alps.

While the Range Rover SVAutobiography was not specifically designed to take on snow-covered roads, it is still astonishing to experience this luxury car's capabilities in such terrain. This test drive proves again, that Range Rover cars benefit greatly from the engineering know-how available at Land Rover.

Activities & Relaxation

Besides thrilling test drives, the hotel also offers pure relaxation with a breathtaking view over the mountains. Guests can enjoy pampering massages and relaxing moments in the pool and sauna area.

Experiencing Arosa Kulm Hotel

The history of the Arosa Kulm Hotel dates back to 1882. Back then, a hotel with 30 rooms called "Kurhaus" was opened. Today, the hotel has kept some of the spirit from this era. Although, rooms have been added and renovated on a regular basis. Junior Suites come with a bedroom and separable living room with sofa and comfortable armchair. The perfect amount of space for a week in the Alps with marvelous mountain view!

Another wonderful witness of ancient times is the perfectly preserved "Nostalgiebar" which is used as smoker's lounge. Here, guest can enjoy a drink and cigar in an authentic environment. The hotel has a nice selection of cigars and spirits available for enthusiasts to choose from.

Right next to the bar we find a large library with a beautiful wooden floor and large windows offering beautiful views. There is a big selection of books and a cozy fireplace to settle down and enjoy a snowy afternoon. For those having a competitive spirit, a pool table is waiting.

Culinary Delights

People looking for authentic Swiss cuisine will be pleased by the Muntanella restaurant situated inside the Arosa Kulm Hotel. Chef Florian Mainzger and his team have been looking for new and old local specialties to bring the flavors of the Swiss Alps on the guests' plates. Here, we enjoy alpine cuisine to the fullest!

One of the culinary highlights is the Ahaan Thai restaurant. It is a true Thai palace amidst the Swiss mountains. But why does the Arosa Kulm Hotel serve food from the Far East? Well, in the 1930s, the Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej learned to ski in Arosa and stayed at the Arosa Kulm Hotel. Ever since, Thai Cuisine has been a part of the hotel. Today, chef Tussanee and her team enchant guests with authentically prepared Thai delicacies.

When the first snow transforms the Alps into a winter wonderland, it is time to go out there and explore. The ideal companion for adventures in the snow is the new Land Rover Defender. We took on a Christmas getaway and realized that it is the ideal car for challenging conditions. Let us tell you more!

Christmas time in the Alps

Christmas is the most magical time of the year. Snow covered trees, fairy lights and warm, comfy living rooms filled with laughter and joy. For us, there is no better place to experience the Christmas spirit than in the Swiss Alps.

This year, Santa has put something special under the Christmas tree: a Favre-Leuba Sky Chief Chronograph. The ETA Valjoux powered watch comes with a beautiful burgundy dial with subtle brown subdials. A matching brown suede strap is complimenting the 43mm steel case perfectly.

While giving is a wonderful part of the Christmas festivities, the joy of being together and spending quality time with loved ones is what makes this holiday so special. When staying in a chalet high up in the mountains, the atmosphere is filled with the warmth of candles, the fire place and joy.

Exploring with the new Defender

For adventures in the snow, one needs a trustworthy companion. We found it in the new Land Rover Defender. This vehicle has been designed for optimum durability. Hence, it can handle extreme terrains and confidently takes us from the urban jungle into icy environments.

We love how the new Defender is honoring the vehicle's history for rugged solidity while thoroughly remaining a Defender for the 21st century. This is most felt inside the car. Here, we find technology that was invented for modern-day adventures. Land Rover's most intuitive technologies to date ensure convenience, connectivity and visibility.

In terms of design, the new Land Rover Defender convinces us with its reductive, sophisticated surfaces. True British design with integrity!

One thing Favre-Leuba and Land Rover share, is their aim to push the boundaries of innovation. Their timepieces and cars offer a definitive reliability, built to accompany pioneers throughout all domains.

The 918 Spyder was first shown as a concept at the 80th Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Ten years later we return to Geneva to drive and experience this one of a kind hypercar. One thing is clear: Porsche has set a standard of how supercars need to be built in the future. Read on to know why!

The Porsche 918 Spyder's story

Just three months after revealing the concept at the Geneva Motor Show, Porsche managed to collect 2,000 declarations of interest by car enthusiasts. Following, the supervisory board of Porsche AG went ahead and swiftly approved series development of the 918 Spyder.

The production version was eventually unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was produced in a limited series of, you guessed it, 918 cars. Development took place in Weissach, before being assembled in Zuffenhausen. The first deliveries were made beginning of December 2013 with the cars bearing a price tag of EUR 611'000 and USD 845'000 respectively.

Would you have guessed that the country with the most orders was the United States with 297 units? The US were followed by China and Germany with around 100 orders each.

Hypercar of the future

Powered by a naturally aspirated 4.6 L V8 engine, developing 599 hp, the 918 Spyder has to be added to the category of hypercars. The Germans even added two electric motors delivering an additional 282 hp for a combined output of 875 hp. With these specs one just has to admit that is plays in the same league as the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari. In fact, the trio is making up the so-called holy trinity of hypercars.

Although the 918 Spyder is carrying heavier and more powerful electric motors and more battery capacity than either of its hypercar competitors from Ferrari or McLaren, it capitalizes on its 21st-century zero-emissions technology to appeal as a driver's car that neither could quite level with.

Actually, the 918 Spyder can be driven for around 24 kilometers on electric power alone. This is a pretty impressive stat for such a heavy car. At the same time it also has a motorsport-derived normally aspirated V8 engine that revs to almost 9000rpm and makes the car both raw and exciting. Add four-wheel drive and more than 900lb ft of torque into the mix and you have a truly amazing hypercar that sets new standards in the industry.

Touring around in Geneva

As we take the 918 Spyder on the road we are totally amazed by the spine-tingling roar of the V8 engine. At the same time, we are happy that we can make use of the hybrid in the city since loud cars are not particularly liked by everyone. Actually, this mode is especially useful in places like Monaco. There, the police regularly confiscates Supercars from drivers who let the engine roar too loudly.

While in Geneva, we stop for coffee at Oh Martine before enjoying a long drive along the Lac Léman with beautiful views of the Swiss and French Alps. In the evening, we have a reservation at La Terrace, the restaurant inside the Hôtel Beau-Rivage Genève. Here, we enjoy a wonderful dinner with magnificient views over the Jet d'Eau and the Old Town of Geneva. The perfect way to end an eventful day with the Porsche 918 Spyder.

When thinking of classy places to visit, many come to mind. But is there a place that combines classy elements with rough nature and offers incredible indigenous craftsmanship? We found it in Scotland. Let us tell you why we think this northern country is the ultimate destination for gents!

Vibrant coffee culture in Edinburgh and Glasgow

As we land in Edinburgh after an early morning flight from Geneva, we want to go straight to a coffee shop. Luckily we arranged a car pick up directly at the airport. For this road trip we chose a versatile yet sporty car and found the perfect model: Jaguar F-Pace SVR. But now, off to get coffee!

In recent years, Edinburgh has developed a vibrant coffee culture. Many small, independent coffee shops have opened. Moreover, the Scots have discovered the fun in roasting their own beans! This resulted in a number of new micro roasters all over Scotland.

Eventually, we decide to visit the lovely coffee shop Strumpets in the West End district. Owner Ingrida is preparing the delicious flat whites and espressos herself! She managed to create a warm coffee shop atmosphere with a nice interior design and a cozy outdoor seating area.

Here, we settle down for a bit in order to make plans for our trip ahead. The flat white tastes great and we can't help ourselves but order another round! Ingrida is a very welcoming host and she shares with us many insider tips that are super useful for our planned journey.

Unfortunately, we don't spend more time in Edinburgh because there would be more great coffee shops around. For top notch barista coffee we can recommend The Milkman, Leo's Beanery or Söderberg. Find the complete list here!

The next day, we wake up in Glasgow. Scotland's cultural hub is just a one hour drive away from the capital city. Here, we stop at East Coffee Company in the up and coming Dennistoun district. They recently opened a second outlet just around the corner from their original store.

Here, at 30 Hillfoot St they also roast their coffee beans. We love how this gives the location an artisanal and crafty touch! First, we enjoy a round of fresh flat whites and talk about watches from Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Personally, we love to wear the iconic Reverso. More specifically the Reverso Classic Large Duoface Small Seconds. With two time zones on both dials, this watch is both classy and useful! We love how the proportions of the dial are adhering to the famous golden rule and embodies the Art Deco style. What are you thoughts about it?

But now back to the café. Here, a wonderful brunch gets served. The kitchen crew is extremely creative and offers re-interpreted breakfast classics like pancakes, pain au chocolat or banana bread. We are blown away by the fusion flavors that the pancakes with rhubarb and ginger offer!

Other good coffee shops in Glasgow include Wilson Street Pantry, Steamie Coffee Roasters and Papercup Coffee Company. Find the whole list here!

Road trip through the Highlands

After two days in Scotland's largest cities it is time to head up north. After all, the Highlands are the main reason why we came to Scotland. Incredible landscapes, wonderful drives, wild animals, Scotch whisky and local delicacies. All that is awaiting us!

First, we drive from Glasgow through the Loch Lomond National Park. The scenic drive along the Loch Lomond would already be worth this trip. However, our goals is the iconic Glen Etive near the town of Glencoe. Here, some sequences of the final scene in Skyfall were shot. Cool, right?

Also, wild and majestic stags can be spotted right from the narrow road if you get lucky. We did!

After a night in Fort Williamat the foot of Scotland's tallest mountain Ben Nevis, we continue our drive up north to Skye. On our way, we get to see stunning scenery and experience wildly changing weather. From sun, to rain, to snowfall in only a couple of minutes!

Because our stay on the Isle of Skye was so memorable, we dedicated it a separate blogpost which can be read here.

After a night on Skye at The Three Chimneys and The House Over-bywe set out for a long drive. Our destination is the iconic region around the Dornoch Firth. On our way there we have to once again battle adverse weather conditions. Luckily we did not run into any issues with our reliable Jaguar F-Pace SVR!

What distilleries to visit?

Since we are whisky enthusiasts, we recently started publishing articles about the topic. Our love to Highland spirits was also one reason why we decided to take this trip! Now, when it comes to Scotch, the island of Islay is a hotspot for great distilleries. Two of which are Laphroaig and Lagavulin.

However, there is also an excellent distillery on Skye. For now it is even the only one on the island! Talisker crafts a rather smoky and rich whisky in a very scenic location. Just next to their production premises, Caora Dhubh Coffee Company has opened a small takeout store a while ago. Now you can get properly prepared for your distillery tour by having a delicious flat white!

As mentioned before, we drove all the way from Skye to the Dornoch Firth region. Here, a high concentration of world-class whisky brands can be found. Two of which, we will be visiting!

Just as the sun sets, we arrive at the charming Tarrel Farmhouse, situated right at the coast. Jennie and Joe are lovely hosts and make us feel very comfortable. We are happy to have found a cozy place for a good night sleep after a long drive.

The next morning we get an early start. After a delicious breakfast with home-made, barista-style coffee (!) we head to the nearby Glenmorangie House. This wonderful estate has a long history in the region. Moreover, lots of the Barley Glenmorangie uses for their whisky, grows just around the property.

Next, we go on a distillery tour at Glenmorangie. The brand is one of the most iconic Scotch producers in the world and we hence dedicated a whole blogpost to our experience there. Read it here!

Since Glenmorangie is a rather big brand, we also wanted to visit smaller company. In Balblair we found the ideal distillery! It is situated just a couple miles away in Edderton. Here, people have been distilling since 1790. It is not surprising that the people working at Balblair are very proud of that long tradition.

At Balblair they only operate two stills. However, their whisky is incredibly smooth and quite rare because of the small quantities they produce each year. We highly recommend reading this blogpost we published about Balblair if you want to know more about this fascinating brand.

After two days at the Dornoch Firth, we head down south again. On our way we stop in Wilkhaven to see the Tarbat Ness Lighthouse and then in Cromarty again to have a coffee at the wonderful Slaughterhouse Coffee. Here, you can enjoy a clean flat white right at the waterfront - wonderful, isn't it?

This is where we end our travel report from Scotland. Do you agree that Scotland is the ultimate destination for gents? Leave a comment with your favorite place in this magnificent country!

If you want to read more about road trips in the UK, we recommend you to read this blogpost about Southern England.

Do you ski? Or maybe you enjoy a calm tour with the snowshoes? Today, we want to share with you our experience with a very different winter sport that we discovered thanks to Longines. But let's start from the beginning!

Driving through winter wonderland

Our adventure starts near the Swiss capital of Bern. We pack our winter stuff into the versatile Land Rover Discovery Sport and arrive after a 3 hour drive at the famous Julier Pass in the Canton of Grisons.

We chose the Discovery Sport for this trip because of its flexible 5+2 seating, clever storage solutions and enough space for everyone. With its distinct contours, perfectly balanced proportions and characteristic design, it is also aesthetically pleasing!

After some kilometers of pure driving pleasure we arrive on top of the Julier Pass. Here, we are happy to be wearing our AW Driving Gloves. With the many times we get out of the car to take photos, our hands would feel uncomfortably cold to drive.

Exploring St. Moritz' rich history

After leaving the winding roads of the Julier Pass behind us, we arrive in the Engadine. It represents a long, high Alpine valley region in the eastern Swiss Alps. Protected by high mountain ranges on all sides and famous for its sunny climate and beautiful landscapes, the valley is home to the Alpine metropolis of St. Moritz.

© Chalet Spa Collection

Some of you might have guessed it by now, we will be attending the White Turf! It is already the third time that we will witness the spectacular races on the frozen lake. However, this time we also want to take a full day to explore the picturesque town. First up, we head to the Badrutt's Palace to attend the Grand Prix Cocktail presented by Longines. Here, we get to meet some of the jockeys who will race on Sunday. Also, we enjoy a wonderful view down on the frozen lake. The conditions are perfect for a thrilling day at the races!

Next up, we head to the iconic Kulm Country Club for dinner. Here, top athletes and celebrities gathered during the Roaring Twentiesincluding the silent film legend Charlie Chaplin and US President Calvin Coolidge. Watching the tumult in front of the pavilion from the finely carved arched windows was just as popular then as it is today!

© zvg via Baublatt

Although recently renovated, the Kulm Country Clubs has luckily preserved the original Art Deco and wood. Where necessary, the windows and doors were custom-built, true to the original! Besides the excellent cuisine and charming interior design, the classy atmosphere and rich history of the establishment are doing the trick for us.

Elegant racing Sunday

After a relaxing night we get up early because we are eager to start into this exciting day ahead of us! Attending the White turf is always something that we look forward to weeks in advance. As a unique, exclusive, top-class event with exciting horse-racing and gourmet catering, it is one of our favorite weekends of the year. Imagine regular horse racing but on a frozen lake. All taking place in winter sunshine among the stunningly beautiful, snow-capped mountains of St Moritz. Truly a dream come true!

Horse racing has a long tradition in St. Moritz. Very long actually! Because the first race-meeting took place back in 1907. Since then, the White Turf has established itself as annual event where race-horse owners, trainers and jockeys from all over the world meet up for a thrilling competition.

In order to get to the race track, we transfer by horse carriage from the hotel to the frozen Lake St. Moritz. Could it get any classier? At the race track we first get spoiled in the VIP area: champagne, delicious snacks and good company await us!

Besides enjoying the extraordinary catering, we get the chance to get some new watches on our wrists. Here, one of the highlights is definitely the new HydroConquest in green color. Actually, the timepiece is more of a khaki tone. It features a ceramic bezel that compliments the dial very well. Overall a very beautiful, sport watch that is extremely hard to beat in terms of value for money!

Next up, a model from the Conquest V.H.P. line catches our attention. With its white dial, stainless steel case and bracelet and quartz movement, this watch is a true all-rounder and ideal companion for adventures outdoors. Although Longines is a traditional watchmaker with a strong portfolio of mechanical timepieces, their V.H.P. line strives to offer the highest degree of precision and reliability. Two values we appreciate!

The third and last watch we want to introduce to you is one of our all-time favorites by the St-Imier based watchmaker. Called the Avigation BigEyeThis timepiece pays tribute to Longines' rich history in producing watches and instruments for the aviation industry. We appreciate how closely this re-issue resembles the original one from the 1930s. It perfectly matches today's Zeitgeist with its well-sized lugs and pushers. Also, at 41mm it comes in a modern size that fits most wrists extremely well!

Giddy-up!

After spending some time talking about timepieces, it is finally time to watch some races! A stunning 13'500 spectators gather on this Sunday to cheer for the jockeys and their horses. Today's highlight is the Longines 81st Grand Prix of St. Moritz with a prize money of 111k Swiss Francs. Eventually, jockey Dennis Schiergen rides his horse Wargrave to a great victory. Congrats Dennis!

After the thrilling race we settle down in the Longines tent and enjoy a wonderful selection of delicious sweets as desert. At the White Turf, they really know how to spoil their guests!

Way too soon, the event is over and we have to head back home. It was once again a weekend to remember. Weather, gastronomy, races and wonderful company - that more than we can ask for. To us, the combination of elegance and adrenaline at the White Turf makes for an ideal getaway!
