Event Preparations

The night before the event check-in at the IN LAIN Hotel Cadonau. It is the smallest 5-star superior hotel in Switzerland and is only a 30 minute drive away St. Moritz, which can get pretty croweded when events take place in town. Here we spend a wonderful evening enjoying some incredible food prepared by Michelin-star Chef Dario Cadonau. During the dinner we get the chance to talk watches.

One definitely wants to wear a chronograph during a classic car event. And one of the first chronographs coming to mind is of course the iconic Zenith El Primero. The movement is so precise and proven that is was used by many other brands back in the days. One of them was, you guessed it, Rolex! Their beloved Daytona was outfitted with the reliable El Primero movement during the years 1988 to 2000.

Another brand known for its chronograph watches is IWC. Although their Pilot's Watch was developed for aviation, it is often associated with racing as well. The brand certainly embraces that and is proud of its involvement in Formula One.

Attending THE ICE St. Moritz

The next morning, we finally step on the frozen Lake St. Moritz. An unbelievable amount of extremely rare cars can be admired during THE ICE. The fact that the owners of these gems drive the cars on snow and ice is just mind blowing!

Since it can get freezing cold on the lake, many of the spectators wear a thick coat or winter jacket. But no outfit is complete without an appropriate timepiece. One model we can certainly recommend is the Omega Speedmaster. The Racing edition is particularly suitable of course. Did you know that while the Speedy was the watch first worn on the moon, it was originally designed for racing?

Two more models underline the Speedy's racing heritage. One of them is the Omega Speedmaster Racing with a beautiful red dial and yellow second hand. Dubbed "Michael Schumacher" it pays tribute to the Ferrari which the German icon famously drove during his successful Formular One career.

Join us for a thrilling driving experience on the tracks of the iconic Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo. During the course of three days, we will conquer numerous mountain passes on our way from Geneva to Nice. Let's go!

Geneva - Uriage

The first part of the route takes us through beautiful moody forests. With the all-wheel drive of the Jaguar F-Type R Convertiblethe 575 hp are no challenge to handle - even on wet roads. On our first day, we already drive parts of the Rally Automobile Monte-Carlo. The iconic Col du Granier for example was already part of the rally in 1962.

After an exciting journey full of historic highlights, a first culinary highlight awaits us at the Maison Aribert near Grenoble. The small, luxurious hotel is run by 2-Michelin-star chef Christophe Aribert who set up a wonderful place at the crossroads of the Vercors, Belledonne and Chartreuse mountain ranges. It is the perfect base camp for car enthusiasts.

For us coffee enthusiasts, the Café Aa contemporary village café, is an absolute highlight. Located on the ground floor of Maison Aribert, Café A is both authentic and modern. Here, we start into the second day - the French way with an espresso and some croissants as well as a pain au chocolat.

Uriage - Saint-Geniez

After a delicious breakfast, we continue our trip through the French Alps. Four rally stages await us today. All of them with historic significance.

Furmeyer - Barcillonette: In total, the Rally Automobile Monte-Carlo led over this section at least 17 times, which makes it one of the most famous stages.

Vaumeilh - Claret: This short stage was only driven once, during the 86th Rally Automobile Monte-Carlo in 2018.

Sisteron - Thorad: This great rally stage has been driven more than 28 times since 1966 and offers an exceptional view of the valley.

Briançonnet - Entrevaux: This stage was driven in the most recent edition of the rally and is the last stage of our tour.

Although a bit tired, we happy at the beautiful Ultimate Provence Hotel. The luxurious property is surrounded by its own vineyards. Designed in contemporary style, the 33 rooms of the hotel in the Var are perfect to unwind after a long day. Let's enjoy the beauty of the Provence region.

Overlooking the vines, each room is instilled with a style of its own. The design hotel was built and equipped with attention to detail. Small, intimate and modern, it matches our taste perfectly! Saint-Geniez - La Garde-Freinet

The third and last day leads us to Nice. With its glamor and luxury, the Côte d'Azur has fascinated generations of guests before us. But what can also be found on the French Riviera are spectacular landscapes with rugged mountains behind the azure sea. The legendary coastal roads that run directly along the Mediterranean and along the cliffs make for lasting impressions. A great way to end the Jaguar Alpine Rally, during which the F-Type R Convertible proved very suitable for the winding roads leading from Geneva to Nice.

Wrist Watch Check

As many of you know, we are huge watch enthusiasts. Hence, we want to share some more information about the watches we brought on this special trip.

Jager-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin

Being a popular brand in Britain, Jager-LeCoultre is a very suitable brand to wear on a Jaguar rally. Its history is strongly linked with polo playing British officers, hence the good fit. For the trip we chose to wear a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin reference 172.2.79.S. The beautiful 38mm case is made from rose gold, inside ticks a manual in-house movement.

Rolex Turn-O-Graph

The other timepiece we brought is a 36mm Rolex Turn-O-Graph in a steel case. This reference 116264 is powered by an automatic in-house movement. It is one of the later references of the Turn-O-Graph models, which nowadays are part of the Datejust collection. Characteristically, its fluted bezel is equipped with a diving scale. The popping red second hand and date make for a versatile mixture of dress and tool watch.

Few vehicles by Jaguar are as iconic as the F-Type. Whether you drive it in the city or on narrow roads in the mountains, good times await you. Let us take you for a spin in the Jaguar F-Type R Convertible!

From the City to the Alps

Who doesn't love that good old roadster feeling? Driving around in a two-seat sports car is one of our favorite forms of experiencing that wonderful feeling of freedom. When it comes to roadsters, the Jaguar F-Type is a somewhat overlooked model. We think that's unjust. Since the F-Type got a facelift in 2020, it is available in three models. Both the 450 and 575 are powered by a supercharged V8 engine. It's safe to say that the one with more puff rivals the Porsche 911. However, you won't see as many F-Types on Switzerland's streets. Definitely a plus for us!

Leaving the bustling streets of the city behind, the Jaguar F-Type truly comes to life. On the winding roads of the Swiss Alps, the V8 truly unfolds its potential. At least in terms of performance. When it comes to sound, the Jaguar isn't roaring as it used to. Emissions laws and regulations have clamped down on it. That being said, it still sounds good. It just gargles and burbles less.

One of the last Jaguar F-Types?

Unfortunately, the Jaguar F-Type might have a limited lifespan. A while ago, the carmaker announced it will be an all electric brand in a couple of year. It's obvious that they won't have a role for the supercharged V8 anymore when that day comes.

Consequently, Jaguar has done very little to enhance the F-Type since it first arrived back in 2013. It doesn't really make sense to invest heavily in a coupé and roadster when you're not going to be selling them at all in a handful of years. At Artworth we certainly hope that Jaguar will continue constructing two-seat sports cars in the future. They're just too good at manufacturing cars that are fast, beautiful and fun to drive!

After a good night sleep, we get an air lift to the nearby race track. After taking in the magnificent aerial views, we meet today's instructor: Ben Collins! He's known as THE STIG from the hit series TOP GEAR. Moreover, he was a stunt driver for James Bond. As such, there are few people who know the Aston Martin models better than he does.

Racing Aston Martin Cars

After an insightful instruction by Ben Collins, we start our training as stunt drivers. In true James Bond fashion, we get to test different Aston Martin models.

Among them are the DBX, Vantage, DB11, and DBS. What a lineup! Inspired by 007, we obviously had to conduct the training in classy suits.

Experiencing the difference between the newly launched SUV DBX707 and V12 Vantage was as special highlights. While both cars drive differently, they both have that particular Aston Martin feeling to them. And of course also that 007 sex appeal.

During this thrilling yet classy event, collector's cars revive all the glory of old-style motor-racing and compete on Monaco's legendary track. Historic Grand Prix of Monaco

Organized by the Automobile Club de Monaco, the Monaco Historic GP is a true testament to the Principality's passion for motorsports. The first event dates back to 1997, when it marked the 700th anniversary of the Dynasty of the Princes of Monaco. Held semiannually, the Monaco Historic GP is usually held two weeks before the famous Formula 1 GP. At the event, visitors can admire cars from the pre-war era up to the 1980s. All of them have taken part in international races. The lineup includes Ferraris, Maseratis, Bugattis, Lotuses, Matras and more. Pre-war voiturettes, front- and rear-engined GP cars, sports cars, F1 & F2 models, and more are divided into 7 or 8 series. The rare, and often iconic, motorsport vehicles have the privilege of competing on the famous race track. Today, it still uses almost exactly the same route as when it started in 1929. At 3.3 km it is one of the shortest, most technical circuits in motorsport, with a tricky narrow track.

On Sunday, the first race starts at 9am. Single-seaters compete for a maximum of 45 minutes in each series. From 1950s sports cars to 70s F1 racers, every engine roars and every tire squeaks in its own unique way. Beyond the competition and its winners, the Monaco Historic GP is first and foremost a great opportunity to share good times around motorsports' most beautiful feats of engineering. We love to discover legendary cars in this unique atmosphere. The Monaco Historic Grand Prix manages to bring together everyone who loves motorsports!

TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition

Few brands have a connection to motorsports as strong as TAG Heuer. Within the racing community, the brand has a strong bond with Gulf. Their relationship dates back to 1971 when the movie Le Mans was launched that famously starred Steve McQueen. Apparently he insisted on wearing a blue dial Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 Ref. 1133B. In the movie you can see him drive a Porsche 917K. The car was painted in Gulf's color scheme: light blue with orange and dark blue stripes.

TAG Heuer now brings back this famous color scheme on its iconic Monaco timepiece. On the dial, the watch features a large 60 applied at 12 o'clock. This is a much appreciated nod to the racing number on the Porsche Gulf racing cars. The 12-hour counter is silver opaline, while the 30-minute counter features Gulf's three colors. Surprisingly, the Gulf logo on the dial is totally white. Personally, we like this subtle co-branding.

Inside the timepiece ticks the Calibre Heuer 02 with an in-house integrated chronograph movement. It is visible through a sapphire case back and offers up to 80 hours of power reserve. For the TAG Heuer Gulf Special Editionthe movement was personalized. It comes with a blackened rotor, a column wheel and special engravings colored to match the Gulf color scheme.

Veuve Clicquot Champagne

No racing weekend without champagne! Or at least not for us. We were delighted to see Veuve Clicquot partnering with the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco. The brand set up lounges in the paddock and in front of the iconic Hôtel Hermitage. The perfect place to settle down and enjoy a glass of champagne while learning more about the cars and drivers competing in the Historic GP. Santé!

An electrified Land Rover Defender from 1990? This was made possible by the Swiss company Revive Conversions. Let's take a closer look at their Land Rover Defender 90 E!

Electrified Land Rover Defender

The company Revive Conversions is based near the Swiss watchmaking capital Biel/Bienne. They are specialized in EV conversions, focusing on classic cars. One of their latest conversions is a beautiful Land Rover Defender from 2001. The Defender is now equipped with a Hyper9 IS engine by NetGain. It delivers an incredible torque of 235 Nm (from 0 to 6000 rpm).

The battery pack used is a EP88 Lithium-Ion (x4) from Mattro. This company is based in Austria and manufactures in the European Union. The battery offers a range of 160 - 200 km at a capacity of 35.2 kWh.

P791 The Car Residence

We had the pleasure to go hands-on with the Land Rover Defender 90 E inside P791 The Car Residence. This company offers vehicle storage at the highest level and is located near Bern, Switzerland. Their newly created space can best be described as a discreet car hotel. A worthy place to present this kind of Defender!

The ICE St. Moritz

The ICE St. Moritz has been created to enjoy driving, showing and watching some of the world's most exciting motor cars in the unlikely environment of the frozen lake. The idea first came in mind in the mid-Eighties and it took many years to make it true.

It is a very different event, a refreshing concours. A completely magical environment where drivers, collectors, and just plain car enthusiasts enjoy a late winter day in the sunshine, surrounded by the landscape and atmosphere that only St. Moritz, at the top of the world, is able to offer.

In January 1985, a group of British Cresta Run Members, led by Scotsman Keith Schellenberg, drove to St. Moritz to enjoy the run. To make things more interesting, they decided to drive their vintage open Bentleys. When in St. Moritz, they saw the frozen lake and decided to do some laps on the horse racing track in their glorious sixty-year-old chariots. In that moment, the idea of The ICE was born. It then took some 34 years, until the first edition could take place.

IWC Schaffhausen

One of the key partners of The ICE St. Moritz is its official timekeeper IWC Schaffhausen. The innovative company is deeply rooted in American pioneering spirit and entrepreneurship. Florentine Ariosto Jones, a watchmaker from Boston, founds the International Watch Company in 1868. He draws on the help of eminently qualified Swiss watchmakers, modern technology, and hydro-power sourced from the nearby River Rhine to manufacture pocket watch movements of the highest possible quality.

IWC launches the first "Special Pilot's Watch" in 1936. In 1939, the Portuguese watch is born: two importers from Portugal order a series of large wristwatches with high-precision pocket watch calibers. In response to demand, IWC develops in 1940 the Big Pilot's Watch 52 T.S.C. with a central seconds hand. It features a rotating bezel with an arrowhead index that can be used to register take-off times. It is also fitted with an anti-magnetic escapement.

For racing, the IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 is the perfect choice. It comes in a robust stainless steel case and is equipped with the reliable self-winding 69385 Calibre. This IWC-manufactured movement offers up to 46 hours of power reserve.

IWC Racing

In 2018, the brand founded a motorsport team, becoming the first watch brand to compete in classic car races with its own team and car. Since then, the IWC Racing Team has contested select historic racing events in its chosen car: The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing".

One of the most iconic sports cars ever built, the "Gullwing" dates back to the time when IWC's watchmakers designed the first Engineer. With its characteristic doors reminiscent of a seagull's wings, it was manufactured by Daimler-Benz between 1954 and 1957 as a road-ready version of the 300 SL racing car. Motor racing enthusiasts are very passionate about the "Gullwing", and it perfectly embodies IWC's core values of style, quality, originality and outstanding craftsmanship.

Born in Salzburg in 1991, Laura Kraihamer joined the IWC racing family in 2021. She made her debut for the IWC Racing Team on the occasion of the 78th Goodwood Members' Meeting. At the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing", Kraihamer raced in the Stirling Moss Trophy. We're excited to see her race at The ICE St Moritz this year!

Kulm Country Club

A special highlight of The ICE St. Moritz is the exclusive dinner hosted for collectors by IWC Schaffhausen. It is held at the Kulm Country Club. At this spot on 11 February 1928, top athletes and celebrities gathered, including film legend Charlie Chaplin and US President Calvin Coolidge. They followed the action on the ice rink in front of the pavilion from the finely carved arched windows. These beautifully carved windows are still as attractive today following the recent renovations to this architectural gem. The original Art Deco and wood was preserved.

One floor down, on the ground floor, is the heart of the Kulm Country Club. During the 1928 Olympic Winter Games, guests, locals, and athletes stomped through the large circular arch in the entrance area. These Games were the first official Olympic Winter Games. Visitors were proud to arrive in St. Moritz driving their new Bugatti Royale or Mercedes-Benz Type S: the superlative hand-built vehicles of the 1920s. The ice rink of the Kulm Country Club soon became a landmark meeting point both for guests and locals in St. Moritz. Those who did not dare to put on ice skates watched the figure skaters - the social highlight at the winter sports resort in 1928.
