Inside the Carl F. Bucherer Manufacture

The history and development of the Lucerne-based watch brand is closely linked to the person of Carl Friedrich Bucherer. He was a visionary who created timepieces that moved with the times. Quite literally. He always aimed to combine extravagance and aesthetic appeal in extraordinary ways. In 1888, Carl Friedrich Bucherer opened a jewelry and watch shop in Lucerne. Thereafter, his name rapidly became a synonym for quality and originality. His two sons followed in his footsteps: one became a watchmaker while the other trained as a goldsmith. Today, the combination of these two skills is still reflected in the Carl F. Bucherer timepieces.

Carl F. Bucherer's recent history is shaped by the launch of the in-house manufactured CFB A1000 movement in 2008. It is equipped with a unique peripheral rotor. Soon after the launch of this revolutionary movement, the brand became a member of the illustrious Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie.

The groundbreaking movement and its predecessors are the center of attention at the Carl F. Bucherer manufacture in Lengnau, a small watchmaking town situated between Geneva and Zurich. Here, the 4 in-house movements are manufactured by skilled artisans.

The Peripheral Technology by Carl F. Bucherer

Movements using the peripheral technology feature a special winding mass. It's a peripherally-mounted annular segment, swinging bidirectionally around the movement. It replaces the centrally-mounted oscillating weight, which usually rotates over the movement. While the technology allows for thinner watches, it also offers an unobstructed view of the beautifully finished movement. This is very attractive to watch enthusiasts and aficionados like us.

While at the manufacture, we get to see how the Manero Peripheral BigDate is assembled. A very delicate task that involves many different parts and requires a steady hand.

Carl F. Bucherer Manero Peripheral BigDate

The Manero Peripheral BigDate is an outstanding timepiece that perfectly blends design, material, and technology. Its 42mm stainless steel case houses the automatic CFB A2011 movement. It offers a power reserve of 55 hours and is water-resistant to 3 bar (30 m). At CHF 8'300, you get a whole lot of engineering, craftsmanship, and design for your money.

The Manero Peripheral BigDate has been interpreted in two distinct versions. One has a light blue dial with a contrasting small-seconds subdial in beige, followed by a big date and day-of-the-week aperture in the same color.

The other has been crafted with a dark gray dial with a contrasting olive-green small-seconds subdial and power reserve indication, followed by a big date and day-of-the-week aperture in the same color. Each dial option is presented on either a textile strap matching the subdial or on a robust stainless steel bracelet. Which one do you prefer?

Historic Grand Prix of Monaco

Organized by the Automobile Club de Monaco, the Monaco Historic GP is a true testament to the Principality’s passion for motorsports. The first event dates back to 1997, when it marked the 700th anniversary of the Dynasty of the Princes of Monaco. Held semiannually, the Monaco Historic GP is usually held two weeks before the famous Formula 1 GP. At the event, visitors can admire cars from the pre-war era up to the 1980s. All of them have taken part in international races. The lineup includes Ferraris, Maseratis, Bugattis, Lotuses, Matras and more. Pre-war voiturettes, front- and rear-engined GP cars, sports cars, F1 & F2 models, and more are divided into 7 or 8 series. The rare, and often iconic, motorsport vehicles have the privilege of competing on the famous race track. Today, it still uses almost exactly the same route as when it started in 1929. At 3.3 km it is one of the shortest, most technical circuits in motorsport, with a tricky narrow track.

On Sunday, the first race starts at 9am. Single-seaters compete for a maximum of 45 minutes in each series. From 1950s sports cars to 70s F1 racers, every engine roars and every tire squeaks in its own unique way. Beyond the competition and its winners, the Monaco Historic GP is first and foremost a great opportunity to share good times around motorsports’ most beautiful feats of engineering. We love to discover legendary cars in this unique atmosphere. The Monaco Historic Grand Prix manages to bring together everyone who loves motorsports!

TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition

Few brands have a connection to motorsports as strong as TAG Heuer. Within the racing community, the brand has a strong bond with Gulf. Their relationship dates back to 1971 when the movie Le Mans was launched that famously starred Steve McQueen. Apparently he insisted on wearing a blue dial Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 Ref. 1133B. In the movie you can see him drive a Porsche 917K. The car was painted in Gulf's color scheme: light blue with orange and dark blue stripes.

TAG Heuer now brings back this famous color scheme on its iconic Monaco timepiece. On the dial, the watch features a large 60 applied at 12 o’clock. This is a much appreciated nod to the racing number on the Porsche Gulf racing cars. The 12-hour counter is silver opaline, while the 30-minute counter features Gulf’s three colors. Surprisingly, the Gulf logo on the dial is totally white. Personally, we like this subtle co-branding.

Inside the timepiece ticks the Calibre Heuer 02 with an in-house integrated chronograph movement. It is visible through a sapphire case back and offers up to 80 hours of power reserve. For the TAG Heuer Gulf Special Edition, the movement was personalized. It comes with a blackened rotor, a column wheel and special engravings colored to match the Gulf color scheme.

Veuve Clicquot Champagne

No racing weekend without champagne! Or at least not for us. We were delighted to see Veuve Clicquot partnering with the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco. The brand set up lounges in the paddock and in front of the iconic Hôtel Hermitage. The perfect place to settle down and enjoy a glass of champagne while learning more about the cars and drivers competing in the Historic GP. Santé!

Adjacent, the Jahreszeiten Bar combines cosy nooks with royal flair, which reflects the hotel’s rich history. We love the ambiance of this typical American Bar. Bar manager Aleksandar's cocktail creations focus on mixology drinks. Here, we enjoy classics such as the Negroni as well as some signature cocktails we recommend you to discover.

On the culinary side, the Royal Club Sandwich with truffles, lobster, and caviar awaits you along with other bar classics such as the Vier Jahreszeiten Burger or Tatar of Bavarian Ox. According to Aleksandar, you will find the best live music on Thursdays!

Inside the Jahreszeiten Cigar Lounge

Since we can't resist a fine cigar, we head over to the Jahreszeiten Cigar Lounge. It has the exclusive ambience of a British gentlemen’s club and is managed by Zechbauer München. Here we find the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a cigar.

Genuine Tobacco Leaf wall paneling and tables are featured in the Cigar Lounge. This interior takes us on a journey back into royal times. The only difference is the smoke extraction technology installed in the room. One of the most efficient systems available, visitors are able to enjoy a lounge without the smell of cigars, even leaving clothes odorless.

A truly royal Stay

After a good night sleep, we enjoy a rich breakfast in our suite. Various delicious dishes can be ordered and enjoyed in the room or on the balcony. Alternatively, it is also possible to enjoy the breakfast buffet in the Schwarzreiter Restaurant & Tagesbar.

Lunch at the Schwarzreiter Tagesbar

Located inside the hotel, the Schwarzreiter Tagesbar represents the more casual part of the Schwarzreiter dining experience. While the Schwarzreiter Restaurant offers a Michelin star culinary indulgence. Both the Tagesbar and Schwarzreiter Restaurant offer dining options, and all food is prepared by the same kitchen team headed up by Chef Hannes Reckziegel.

Get ready to experience “Young Bavarian Cuisine”, as each dish will always have a traditional Bavarian ingredient or method of preparation included within it. We visited the Omega manufacture in our hometown of Biel/Bienne to discover the novelties of 2022. While stunning new watches were released within all collections, 5 particular timepieces caught our attention. Let us show you which ones!

Speedmaster Professional Moonshine™ Gold

The Speedy is now available in 18K Moonshine™ Gold! Inspired by the 4th generation Speedmaster, this 42 mm timepiece comes with a case and bracelet in a unique alloy. The dial is available in different variations. We love the sun-brushed green PVD "step" dial with "Moonwatch" style hands. In this version, iconic ceramic bezel ring is green as well.

Another incredibly beautiful version features a sun-brushed 18K Moonshine™ Gold "step" dial with blackened subdials and indexes. The ceramic bezel ring comes in a nice contrasting black as well. The integrated black rubber strap adds an intriguing sporty component to an otherwise very elegant timepiece.

Both watches come with the famous "dot over 90" and are powered by Omega's Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 with special luxury finish. Which model do you prefer?

Speedmaster '57

Are you a fan of the legendary 1957 original? Then you might get excited about this new 40.50 mm model! It features a stainless steel case and a black dial with recessed hour markers showing vintage Super-LumiNova from beneath. The “Broad Arrow” hands are rhodium-plated, adding to the overall vintage look. A date window has been added at 6 o'clock which makes this watch very suitable for everyday use. Just like the original, the Speedmaster '57 is a manual-winding timepiece, being powered by the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9906.

Seamaster Planet Ocean 6000M

As part of the Five Deeps Expedition in 2019, the Ultra Deep made history when it reached the deepest place on Earth. Following that World Record dive, the game-changing watch has now been adapted for a unique collection available to the public. Tested in real ocean conditions during its development, the design is water-resistant to 6,000 metres (20,000 ft.) and meets the ISO 6425:2018 standard for saturation divers’ watches.

The resulting 45.5 mm model in sand-blasted Grade 5 Titanium features a brushed black ceramic bezel ring with its diving scale in Liquidmetal™. Distinctive “Manta Lugs” can be found at each end of the case, holding on to a striped black and cyan polyamide NATO strap. Inside, the watch is driven by the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8912.

Seamaster Diver 300M

Since 1993, the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M has enjoyed a legendary following. Today’s modern collection has embraced that famous ocean heritage and updated it with OMEGA’s best innovation and design.

This new 42 mm model is crafted from stainless steel and includes a green ceramic bezel with a white enamel diving scale. The dial is also polished green ceramic and features laser-engraved waves and a date window at 6 o’clock. The watch is presented on a matching green rubber strap and is driven by the OMEGA Master Chronometer Calibre 8800, which is visible on the case back.

Since Zurich has a special place in our hearts, we decided to go hands-on with the Carl F. Bucherer Heritage BiCompax Annual Hometown Edition Zurich. The beautiful timepiece is powered by the automatic CFB 1972 movements that is equipped with 47 jewels and offers a power reserve of 42 hours.

It features many useful complications such as chronograph, annual calendar, big date, hour, minute, small seconds and a tachymeter scale. At 41 mm, it is well-sized and its double-domed sapphire crystal adds to the vintage look and feel of the watch. The case back features an engraved sapphire crystal that shows the iconic skyline of Zurich.

The timepiece comes on a black calfskin leather strap with flanks and stitches in green and with a quick release system. Limited to only 88 pieces, the watch costs CHF 6'900.00 and is available at Bucherer in Zurich and Zurich Airport.

Some of the most exclusive classic cars racing on a snowy surface? On a frozen lake even? What sounds impossible, is actually an annual event in Switzerland: The ICE St. Moritz! Let's join the IWC Racing Team and their 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” for an unforgettable weekend.

The ICE St. Moritz

The ICE St. Moritz has been created to enjoy driving, showing and watching some of the world’s most exciting motor cars in the unlikely environment of the frozen lake. The idea first came in mind in the mid-Eighties and it took many years to make it true.

It is a very different event, a refreshing concours. A completely magical environment where drivers, collectors, and just plain car enthusiasts enjoy a late winter day in the sunshine, surrounded by the landscape and atmosphere that only St. Moritz, at the top of the world, is able to offer.

For more than a century, St. Moritz has developed its unique formula that has drawn generations of enthusiastic tourists: a cosmopolitan mix of nature, exclusiveness, sports, and luxury. One of the pillars of this philosophy is the Cresta Run. Here, people from all over the world come together with the goal of speeding down an icy track.

In January 1985, a group of British Cresta Run Members, led by Scotsman Keith Schellenberg, drove to St. Moritz to enjoy the run. To make things more interesting, they decided to drive their vintage open Bentleys. When in St. Moritz, they saw the frozen lake and decided to do some laps on the horse racing track in their glorious sixty-year-old chariots. In that moment, the idea of The ICE was born. It then took some 34 years, until the first edition could take place.

IWC Schaffhausen

One of the key partners of The ICE St. Moritz is its official timekeeper IWC Schaffhausen. The innovative company is deeply rooted in American pioneering spirit and entrepreneurship. Florentine Ariosto Jones, a watchmaker from Boston, founds the International Watch Company in 1868. He draws on the help of eminently qualified Swiss watchmakers, modern technology, and hydro-power sourced from the nearby River Rhine to manufacture pocket watch movements of the highest possible quality.

IWC launches the first “Special Pilot’s Watch” in 1936. In 1939, the Portuguese watch is born: two importers from Portugal order a series of large wristwatches with high-precision pocket watch calibers. In response to demand, IWC develops in 1940 the Big Pilot’s Watch 52 T.S.C. with a central seconds hand. It features a rotating bezel with an arrowhead index that can be used to register take-off times. It is also fitted with an anti-magnetic escapement.

For racing, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 is the perfect choice. It comes in a robust stainless steel case and is equipped with the reliable self-winding 69385 Calibre. This IWC-manufactured movement offers up to 46 hours of power reserve.

IWC Racing

In 2018, the brand founded a motorsport team, becoming the first watch brand to compete in classic car races with its own team and car. Since then, the IWC Racing Team has contested select historic racing events in its chosen car: The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”.

One of the most iconic sports cars ever built, the “Gullwing” dates back to the time when IWC’s watchmakers designed the first Ingenieur. With its characteristic doors reminiscent of a seagull’s wings, it was manufactured by Daimler-Benz between 1954 and 1957 as a road ready version of the 300 SL racing car. Motor racing enthusiasts are very passionate about the “Gullwing”, and it perfectly embodies IWC’s core values of style, quality, originality and outstanding craftsmanship.

Born in Salzburg in 1991, Laura Kraihamer joined the IWC racing family in 2021. She made her debut for the IWC Racing Team at the occasion of the 78th Goodwood Members’ Meeting. At the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”, Kraihamer raced in the Stirling Moss Trophy. We're excited to see her race at The ICE St Moritz this year!

Kulm Country Club

A special highlight of The ICE St. Moritz is the exclusive dinner hosted for collectors by IWC Schaffhausen. It is held at the Kulm Country Club. At this spot on 11 February 1928, top athletes and celebrities gathered, including film legend Charlie Chaplin and US President Calvin Coolidge. They followed the action on the ice rink in front of the pavilion from the finely carved arched windows. These beautifully carved windows are still as attractive today following the recent renovations to this architectural gem. The original Art Deco and wood was preserved.

One floor down, on the ground floor, is the heart of the Kulm Country Club. During the 1928 Olympic Winter Games, guests, locals, and athletes stomped through the large circular arch in the entrance area. These Games were the first official Olympic Winter Games. Visitors were proud to arrive in in St. Moritz driving their new Bugatti Royale or Mercedes-Benz Type S: the superlative hand-built vehicles of the 1920s. The ice rink of the Kulm Country Club soon became a landmark meeting point both for guests and locals in St. Moritz. Those who did not dare to put on ice skates watched the figure skaters – the social highlight at the winter sports resort in 1928.

White Turf 2022

Thanks to perfect weather, as well as impeccable snow and ice conditions on Lake St. Moritz, 9'000 spectators made their way to the lake on this beautiful Sunday. After the first flat race, one of the first highlights takes place: The Credit Suisse skijoring. Praetorius, one of the favorites, loses his rider right at the start. Vienna Woods takes advantage and wins easily against Sociopath.

Up next is the GP Longines. Here, the horses compete in a flat race over 1'800 metres. Jockey Sibylle Vogt immediately takes the lead with Mordred and never relinquishes it. The Hungarian guest Arktisz comes in second ahead of Nimrod, a former winner of the Grand Prix of St. Moritz.

The Swiss watch brand OMEGA is updating its iconic Speedmaster family with seven new timepieces that are part of the Speedmaster Chronoscope collection. The timepieces take inspiration from OMEGA’s chronograph wristwatches from the 1940s. Let's discover these novelties together!

Hands-on with the Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope

With the Speedmaster Chronoscope, OMEGA is returning its vintage roots and rich history. The leaf-shaped hands and three “snail” timing scales on the dial give these watches a clear link to 1940s watchmaking. There’s also an elegant addition of a “spiral” track pattern that runs beneath the Arabic numerals. We love how the style is very similar to the spiralling subdials one finds on most Speedmaster models.

Attached to each 43 mm case, the watches can either be worn on leather straps or the new Speedmaster steel bracelets. These polished-brushed stainless steel bracelets have already won our hearts. We love OMEGA’s patented comfort release adjustment system.

Surprisingly, a new calibre has been developed for this collection of Speedmaster watches. Through the sapphire crystal on the caseback, owners can view the manual-winding OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9908. Now let's get to the functionalities of the watch. Printed in a 1940s “snail” design, each dial reveals a three different scales for measuring. But what exactly?

What to measure with the Speedmaster Chronoscope

Tachymeter - The Chronoscope can tell how fast you are going, based on how far you have travelled. As the scale measures the average travel time between two specific points, it makes no difference whether the journey is in miles of kilometers.

Telemeter - With a simple two-step process, OMEGA's precision tool can tell you exactly how far you are from something that is visible and audible, such as a lightning storm.

Pulsometer - Too slow, too fast, or just right? Thanks to this 30-pulse-per-minute scale, you can measure your own or someone else's heartbeat.

We walk from the train station down to the beautiful Rhône River and cross it. Soon we arrive at the corner of Rue du Rhône and Place de Fusterie. Here, the new flagship boutique of the brand with the winged hourglass is located. A carefully curated selection of Longines timepieces can already be admired through the large windows of the boutique. Its different displays honor the brand’s different collections. When entering, we dive into the universe of the brand. A refined and sophisticated interior design awaits us. The mix of materials and colors is very well executed. It ranges from wood to elegant marble.

In terms of watch models, the boutique offers a great selection of many timepieces from all the current collections. They are beautifully presented between accessories and decorations linked to Longines’ rich history. Shopping here is a true experience!

The Longines Collector’s Corner

Since we are very fond of the history of the brand, we love to discover the new “Collector’s Corner”. It is the first time that Longines has dedicated space in boutique to vintage timepieces. The ones on display are carefully curated. Most are from the collectible eras of the 1950s and 1960s. They come with in-house manufacture movements and were serviced by the brand’s skilled watchmakers in St Imier.

We are very pleased to see Longines embracing its rich history with their involvement in aviation, adventure, and equestrian sports. Since there are many Longines enthusiasts and collectors, the new boutique is bound to be the place for like-minded people to meet and share their passion about the watches from the brand with the winged hourglass.

Once the event preparations are done, we settle down at the Lobby-Lounge-Bar. Here, signature cocktails & light meals are awaiting us. We once again realize that The Schweizerhof Bern is an unrivaled destination for food & drink in Switzerland's capital city. That's also true for cigars. Their Cigar Lounge offers a wide, carefully curated selected range of cigars. An outstanding variety of selected spirits is also on available with helpful staff ready to recommend the ideal pairing to enjoy in a stylish atmosphere.

The Artworth at Bucherer Event

Inspired by the spirit of a concept store, Bucherer has launched the new Bucherer Gallery concept. At selected Bucherer boutiques, entire floors are dedicated to the creation of an exclusive environment filled with inspiring events for design and watch aficionados. The latest opening of a Bucherer Gallery took place here in Bern. The ideal place to host our second ARTWORTH AT BUCHERER event.

The evening is dedicated to certified pre-owned watches. These are timepieces that already have an exciting history and are looking to be worn and enjoyed further. Bucherer has an excellent offering in that category. Aficionados can find sought-after models like the Rolex GMT-Master II, Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso or Omega Speedmaster. All in different variations!

While talking about watches, our guests get spoiled with an outstanding catering by the talented team of the Hotel Schweizerhof Bern. They treat us to salmon tartar with caviar, foie gras parfait and much more. With it, we enjoy excellent champagne by Veuve Clicquot. Wine enthusiast Sandro Sarbach from the Maison even lets us taste the rare cuvée La Grande Dame 2008. What a delight!

There is also an "Italian Corner" at the event. Here, our tailor Monogramme is presenting some of the latest trends in men's fashion. Next to him, guests can enjoy a Negroncino. Cheers!
