As the guest artist for Ruinart's Carte Blanche 2023, Eva Jospin presents her interpretation of the Maison's terroir. She perceives the Montagne de Reims as a cross-section of geographical and temporal layers, both real and imaginary. Inspired by the region's richness and historical significance, from the deep-lying crayères (chalk cellars) to the intertwined vine roots, from the coronation of French kings in the Reims Cathedral to Ruinart's elevation to nobility, Jospin invites us to explore this mystical world where history, vegetation cycles, life, and creation intertwine.

A Stop on Art Basel's World Tour

Following its opening event in Paris earlier this year, the Carte Blanche exhibition by Ruinart travels the world, revealing itself to art enthusiasts across different continents. In June 2023, Art Basel in Basel serves as the next destination for this remarkable exhibition.

As part of the global journey, Carte Blanche offers a gastronomic and artistic interpretation through the "Food for Art" program. Eva Jospin collaborates with local chefs, bringing together the culinary delights of the region with her artwork. It's a unique sensory experience that tantalizes both the palate and the imagination. In Basel, she teams up with Les Trois Rois. Here, tables are spectacularly set for the occasion: a setting of history, encounter and conviviality. It's an experience that combines art and gastronomy to celebrate the aesthetics of craftsmanship - in the kitchen, in the wine cellar or in the artistic creation.

Carmontelle by Eva Jospin

At the heart of this year's Carte Blanche exhibition lies Eva Jospin's sculptural landscape, meticulously crafted using her preferred medium - cardboard. Her installation comprises a series of masterpieces, reliefs, drawings, and embroideries arranged around a Carmontelle, reminiscent of the 18th-century era when Ruinart was founded. The Carmontelle, an invention of the Enlightenment era, serves as the narrative architecture of Carte Blanche. It unfolds a story without words, drawing connections between underground crayères, vineyards, nature, architecture, and the artist's handiwork in the studio, mirroring the intricate processes involved in champagne production. The intertwining motif echoes the vine tendrils, symbolizing the sublime connection between these two worlds.

Eva Jospin's "chefs-d'œuvre" are cardboard sculptures that invite us to explore the region in miniature. These intricate pieces, displayed on two levels, juxtapose representations of natural landscapes with architectural forms, paying homage to the historical crayères. The sculptures captivate with tiny staircases that lead us deep into Ruinart's cellars.
