Founded in 1980, Hublot celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Time to look back on the meteoric rise of a Swiss watch manufacture with humble beginnings to an avant-garde watch brand, known all over the world for its innovative timepieces.
Hublot’s rich history
Everything began in 1980 with Carlo Crocco’ launch of the Classic Original. It combined a gold case with a modern rubber strap, a combination unheard of before its reveal at Baselworld. For the first time in the history of watchmaking, a precious material was combined with a modern material: rubber. Proud of this bold step, a destinct philosophy was introduced: the art of fusion.
Inspired by the first watch by Hublot, the brand introduced its iconic Big Bang Original model in 2005. The innovative materials used in combination with the “sandwich construction” made for a revolutionary timepiece, which quickly won the hearts of many watch enthusiasts. Following the introduction of the Big Bang, Hublot experienced enormous growth. This success prompted the world’s leading luxury company LVMH to purchase the brand in 2008. In order to verticalize production, Hublot opened two buildings in Nyon between 2009 and 2015. At the same time, Hublot opened boutiques in major locations such as New York, Geneva, Tokyo, Zermatt, Paris, London, Dubai and Hong Kong.
In 2010, Hublot introduced the UNICO caliber. It was the first mechanical chronograph movement that was entirely designed, developed and manufactured in-house. It is characterized by its unusual architecture, a double clutch and column wheel visible on the dial side. As part of the so-called “Masterpieces” series, Hublot has also introduced the MP-05 “LaFerrari” with its 637 components, a tourbillon and a power reserve of 50 days.
New Hublot boutique in Zurich
This year, Hublot has doubled its retail space in their boutique on the prestigious Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. Customers get now an even more spacious and luxurious glimpse into the world of Hublot. Stylistically, the boutique is now also in line with other Hublot flagship stores around the world. It features a unique architectural concept that reflects the core concept of the brand: the art of fusion. A combination of mirrors, glass, marble and metal create a unique atmosphere that pays tribute to the energy found in a cosmopolitan city. The interior design concept is completed with large-format Pop Art works, inspired by the legendary Big Bang collection of the brand.
At the opening event, we get to enjoy seasonal treats prepared by the team of chef Andreas Caminada. With it, we pair some Ruinart champagne to celebrate the occasion properly!
While admiring the new boutique, we also get to see the latest novelty of Hublot: the Big Bang Unico Berluti Cold Brown. The timepiece is the result of the collaboration between two maisons known for their extraordinary craftsmanship. The case is made of microblasted and polished black ceramic, while the strap is made of black rubber and genuine Berluti patinated Venezia Leather. At the heart of the watch beats the Unico movement. It is Hublot’s in-house chronograph caliber that offers 72 hours power reserve. Both the bezel and the dial include Berluti leather as well. On the dial, it is enclosed between two sapphire glass parts. Some skeletonization was done as well in the middle of the dial so the beautiful Unico movement can be admired.
Collaboration with Bar am Wasser
With the re-opening of the boutique in Zurich, Hublot has also announced their partnership with Dirk Hany, co-host at Bar am Wasser. He is a legend in the Swiss bar scene and has won several prestigious bartender awards already.
As a cocktail expert, Dirk Hany and his team serve not only classic drinks but also come up with new, innovative creations. One cocktail everyone should taste once at the Bar am Wasser is their ‘Smoke on the Water’. Not only the drink itself but also the presentation is spectacular.
For the Hublot x Berluti collaboration, he has also created a signature cocktail using Hennessy cognac and other fine spirits. The result is a divine drink! For us, Hublot and Bar am Wasser are a great match because both are inspired by the art of fusion and hence aim to create things that no one has dared to before.
